    Pocket pc on wireless network

I have a Dell X51v pocket pc which I have connected to a wireless network.
I can view network files but I cannot open them.
However, I can copy the files from the network so that, after I paste to the pocket pc, I can open them.
I thought this may be a RAM issue but I have tried it on very small text files and the problem still occurs.

Does anyone have an idea as to what the problem might be?

    Many thanks

    Robert

This is probably due to permissions on the Windows share on the PC that hosts the files you are accessing.

Can you tell us a bit more about what software this PC is running, and how you have shared the files.

Re: Pocket pc on wireless network

    Hello Stuart

The server is a desktop computer, running windows xp Home (serv pack 2). It is wired to a Belkin Router.
My laptop computer, also running XP Home (SP2) has no problems accessing the files. It is linked to the network through a belkin pcmia card.
My pocket pc, useing Windows Mobile 5, links wirelessly.

I used router's network set-up wizards to share the files.
I'm not sure what other information I can give to help.

Re: Pocket pc on wireless network

My best guess is that your two PCs use the same username and password, so that you can access the files OK from the laptop, but the Pocket PC is seen as a Guest, and gets the access permissions defined for "Everyone".

I know how to fix this on XP Pro, but I also know that the interface for share permissions on XP Home is very different.

Can someone with XP Home please jump in here with instructions for how to check, and change, the permissions on a share.

What folder(s) are these files in?

I have NOT used any PDA's with Vista, but is your interface software on the PDA Vista compatible?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Pocket pc on wireless network

The Files I am trying to access are in the 'My Documents' folder on the desktop pc. I can see the files but cannot open them. However, because I can see the file, I can select it and copy it to the device. Then I can open it on the device.

I am not using Windows Vista. I did mention that the desktop and the laptop both use XP Home (SP2) and the Pocket pc uses Windows Mobile 5

    Regards

    Ah, now I understand.

When you copy a file to a local folder on your Windows CE device it will be automatically converted to a compatible format, I know this applies to Word and Excel files but I'm not sure about others.

Does the problem apply to all file types? For example can you create a plain text file and see if you can open it.
