Use Gmail and MSN with Outlook 2003

I am having problems retrieving email from msn.com

I have outlook 2003 setup to use gmail.com as a pop3 mail box and msn.com (hotmail) as an http mailserver.

When I send a test message to hotmail and then go to outlook and do a send recieve with the dialog to follow progress set - I get

Task 'Hotmail - Sending' reported error (0x80070005) : 'Access is denied.

I have reset the passwords so they are identical. I have printed and followed the windows live help to try and make sure I have followed exactly how to set everything up properly.

pop.gmail.com sending completed
pop.gmail.com recieving completed
msn sending completed
MSN: folder: Inbox synchronizing headers. completed

Nothing gets read from MSN

I attempted to setup MSN as a pop3 account, but could never get the test transmission to complete properly.
I made sure that the pop3 setup for MSN that I tried - matched the gmail setup

does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get outlook 2003 to process both gmail and msn?

There are options available with the pop3 setup that are not available with the http options.

I am not sure about gmail, but from what I understand hotmail/msn mail will only work with outlook if it is a paid account. You must also have the "Microsoft Outlook Connector for MSN" installed. See: How to configure MSN to work with Outlook

With the latest incarnation of Download details: Microsoft Office Outlook Connector you do NOT have to have a paid subscription to receive e-mail. You must have a paid subscription to access your calendar, tasks, & notes from hotmail.

thank you - I will see if the "connector" helps.

Your knowledge base article uses different pop3 and smtp addresses than Windows live help uses. I will follow kb article and see if it works. One last question in the article they specify Email address as "myemail@msn.com" then they mention "User Name" as the msn account name - is that the "mymail" used in the email address?

The "connector" seems to solve the problem and caused a new one. I now have two separate inboxes - one in the connector tree that has just been added and the original. It seems if the original one only has GMAIL messages and the new one has MSN messages - is this correct?

Yes. is has a separate inbox for each configured account.

Thanks Joe - Do you know of a way that I can get the 2 in boxes to merge into a single in box so I don't have to remember to check both boxes?

You can try setting up a rule to move e-mail from one to the other.
