Recovering 'permanently' deleted items? (2003/SP2)

Is there *ANY* way to recover permanently deleted items from Outlook? Here's what I must have done (although I don't remember doing it at all): I normally keep track of every activity I do at work by making a journal entry and starting the timer. When I finish the activity, I stop the timer and save and close the entry. At the end of the month, I sort the entries by subject and use that list to help write a monthly report of my activities. SOMEHOW I must have deleted all my entries for September instead of August, and shortly thereafter I permanently deleted everything in the Outlook "Deleted Items" folder. So my question is: Is there *ANY* way I can recover those "permanently" deleted items? I did some extra-important work (for my supervisor) in September and would desperately like to recover my journal entries. If there's anyone out there who can help, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

All Outlook items, including journal items, are stored in your .pst file. Do you have a backup of the .pst file from before you cleared the Deleted Items folder?

Check several of the results from Live Search: outlook deleted items recovery. Most of the utility programs are NOT .

ONLY IF you are on Exchange Server, AND these items were in your mailbox folders, NOT in a PST, AND the "Dumpster"* is enabled for your system, select your mailbox Deleted Items Folder, and if following menu exists:

Tools | Recover Deleted Items

you can recover whatever is in there to your Deleted Items Folder, and then from there drag them to where they should be. Good luck!

* If available, "dumpster.ecf" can be installed/enabled on Exchange via Tools | Options | Other | Advanced Options | Add-Ins, where it wil display as "Deleted Item Recovery"

If the conditions are not met, see Hans post.

I'm not on Exchange Server, and I don't have a backup of my outlook.pst file. My employer's IT department might, however. Meantime, after a few minutes of searching, I found this article: http://www.runpcrun.com/deleted-emails-outlook-pst. I've asked our IT guys if they think those techniques might work, but I'll have to wait for an answer until they're done with an unrelated meeting. Anyone else care to weigh in on that article and its techniques? (I notice it specifically mentions only e-mails. Might it also apply to Journal entries as well? [Please, please, please!])

I've never tried the method described in that article, but it should apply to *all* deleted items, whether they are appointments, e-mails or journal entries.
Be sure to try it out on a COPY of your .pst file, not on the original, since you are deliberately corrupting the file in order to trick Outlook.

Definitely will do that. If it works (again, pleasepleaseplease!), I will report back here. Thanks to ALL of you for your very helpful responses so far!

Well, I tried the "corrupting the .pst file" thing. It did NOT restore the journal entries, although it did indeed recover a couple of folders I'd deleted long, long ago. But the story does have a happy ending, because our IT guys found a backup copy of the .pst file on another server. We simply opened that .pst file, and lo and behold, the Journal items were there. I copied them over into my current Journal folder, and that was that. So for me, the moral of the story is to make sure I have a backup and to know where to find it.

I'm glad you have your Journal entries back.

And yes, having backups is *very* important.

You could do worse than install the Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Personal Folders Backup add-in - an Outlook add-in that automates the backup process. Works well here!

Might indeed be worth a try. Thanks for the info.
