contacts show here but not there (Outlook 2003)

I haven't had to deal with Outlook since I retired a few years ago but the church admin uses it and I'm trying to help out with a problem which has appeared since we implemented a domain based network. I think in shifting the .pst files around we must have munged something up.

Usually, when you start to type an address in a new email, Outlook attempts to autocomplete the address. And it still does but it seems to be unable to find some of the addresses which are visible when you go to the contacts list. All of the Distribution Lists are missing but so are some of the individual addresses with no discernible pattern.

When you open the Contacts, all the addresses are there. OTOH, if you open a new message and click the Options button and then click the Messages button, you get a list that does not include the Distribution Lists and also appears to be missing the same individuals.

As a separate, perhaps related?, problem, the Folder List shows 2 'Personal Folders' folders. The contents, including all subfolders and their contents, are the same and making a change to something in one results in the same change in the other. Apparently they are just mirrors but is there a way to get rid of one without affecting the other? Don't know if it confuses Outlook but it certainly confuses me.

Glad you guys are still around. I wouldn't know where else to go for help.

    1) Right-click your Contacts folder.
Select Properties from the popup menu.
Activate the Outlook Address Book tab.
Make sure that the check box labeled "Show this folder as an e-mail Address book" is ticked.

    2) Right-click one of the Personal Folders items.
Select Close Personal Folders from the popup menu.
If that item is grayed out, try it with the other Personal Folders item.

    Thanks for the input.

I had found #1 on the slipstick site. Unfortunately has had no effect.

Both of the Personal Folders have the 'close' item greyed out.

You could try creating a new e-mail profile in the Mail control panel.

Hmmm. And then import the data from the old profile somehow? I'll have to look into that.

You'll be prompted for a .pst file to use. You can use the old file.

Whoops! Sorry I didn't get back more quickly. Yep, new profile seemed to clear out the dupe folders and the Distribution lists now show in the contacts list when you click the address list icon while addressing a message. Some of the personalizations (toolbars, layout) apparently do not carry over but that is not a real problem. Autocompletion does not seem to be working at all, though. Is there a setting somewhere to enable it that I have not found?

As it is now is definitely an improvement but autocompletion would be nice.

    Thanks for the help.

AutoComplete suggestions are stored in the so-called nickname file. With your new profile, you also started out with a new, blank nickname file. As you send and receive e-mails, it'll gradually get filled again and AutoComplete should start working.

In the meantime, you can type part of somebody's name and press Ctrl+K to let Outlook complete it or display a list of suggestions.
