error code kb80073712 (windows vista home premium)

HELP - since I bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium last month I haven't been able to use the windows update service - I keep getting the error code kb80073712. I have tried using the forums to find a way of being able to download them manually but the various solutions haven't worked at all! I cannot even install the updates either. My firewall isn't blocking it. (Windows Firewall) When I first had the laptop there were numerous updates installed but somehow they all seem to have disappeared as well. I promise I haven't been fiddling with the laptop in any way..... By looking at the Google search engine it seems that I am not the only one to have the same problem but it doesn't seem to me that Microsoft cares in any way to fix it! Is there a god//goddess out there that can provide a solution , pretty please??? <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

Thank you John for your quick response - I followed the instructions but the response was that there was it couldn't find the command key or value etc in the registry. 'HKLMCOMPONENTS /v StoreDirty' - plus I noticed that my windows feature dialog box is empty as well - I presume the two problems are connected as they both don't work....... would I have to add the HKLM components etc. key into the registry for it to work?

"would I have to add the HKLM components etc. key into the registry for it to work? " No - the command that you entered deletes this key. If it's not there, then that's probably not the problem. Have a look at this thread in the Dell forums.

This seems to be a very common problem and there doesn't seem to be one fix which works for everyone. Have a look at this thread for some possible solutions or at this Google search for more ideas.

Please post back if one of these works for you.
