Re: Before They Spoiled the Software

That IS an interesting article and will surely provoke all manner of pros and cons with readers! Everyone loves to gripe about Adobe Reader, but my favorite "anti-product" these days is Paint Shop Pro. My difference with the article's author is that it was PSP Version X (is that a 10 or what?) that really has disappointed me. I bailed out several years ago on my long-term dedication to WordPerfect and I guess PSP will be next.

I agree with you on PSP. Even with PSP11 they did not do much better. I have NOT gone to it since I did not see much improvement on some one else's machine.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Anybody using GIMP? Any opinion on it?

I'm starting to tentatively poke a stick at it, but my graphics manipulation needs are light (and my skills lighter).

    Hi John

I am a light user and having being using Gimp since seeing its virtues extolled here in the lounge, I find it useful and easy to use, also recommended in the lounge was photo filter http://www.photofiltre.com/ is free and very good, in particular the transparency tool which is great when you want to use pictures etc. in PowerPoint presentations.

    Cheers

    My two penny's worth:

Adobe PDF Maker 4.0 was just about PERFECT. It just worked and was fast. then they come up updates and now its prone to crashing and is so slow. :-(.

Only if we can go back to version 4.0 but alas no.

    PSP and MS Messenger

I've been sticking with PaintShop Pro upgrade after upgrade. I've yet to be let down, but I have been disappointed. Although I'm a photographer, I'm really put off by the photography angle they're taking with the product (I mean, it is PAINT shop, not PHOTO shop, right?). Version X2 has been sitting beside my laptop for a couple of days - I remember when I was installing a new product within seconds of getting it through my front door. Where have those days gone?

Speaking of gone, I'm REAL annoyed with Microsoft's Messenger. It started out as a very nifty product, now it's practically a full-blown browser with all the bells, whistles, gilt, lights and trimmings they've added. <sigh>

Yes I use GIMP in an occasional way. I didn't previously have much experience of things like Photoshop, but GIMP is free and from what I have learned to do so far seems to do well. The new version 2.4 is due out very soon, and presumably will be available ready compiled for Windows.

There's a very good book about how to use it, available from Amazon for instance.

My kids are dragging me (unwillingly) into IM, at your own risk you might want to look at Pidgin as a simpler IM client which handles many IM and Chat services. See the home page referenced for supported services, and for a list of capabilities see the Pidgin wiki User FAQ. I'm only using it for AIM and Google IM, haven't figured how to use it for GoogleTalk Chat ... yet. (Requires the GLib/GTK object library, which GIMP also uses.)
