Speech recognition built in to Windows (Win XP Office 2003)

My friend was talking about buying a SR programme for his laptop, and I mentioned that XP should have in built in, along with handwriting. My laptop does, and seems to work okay with a headset, though I mostly use the HR as mine is a TabletPC. Does he need to buy a third party application at all, or will Windows be enough? he is a writer who like to talk ideas out loud, then edit them into readable prose, so VR direct into word would be ideal for him. Help on this would be most appreciated. thanks frank.

Does Speech Recognition with Windows XP help? It refers to Office 2002 but I would imagine 2003 would be similar.

Here's some articles from Microsoft about speech recognition in XP - Speech Recognition with Windows XP, How to install and configure speech recognition in Windows XP, How To Use Speech Recognition in Windows XP. You may also want to review Speech recognition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. I've not played with speech recognition in a few years but I know a good microphone is paramount.

Also one needs to keep the background chatter to a low rumble, as it will be picked up and transcribed.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
