    Favorites (Windows XP SP2 IE6)

I just got a new computer at work and in an attempt to save some time I imported Favorites from my old computer. Now I have a Favorites Folder (no star, just a folder icon) and it's not what I imported. In trying to fix it, I think I've made it worse.

So, is there a way to return IE6 to its original state as far as the Favorites folder is concerned, so that I start out with the starred icon and can then just add to it rather than inporting and having a mess I can't work with?

    Thanks

    CD,
Can you still add a new favorite to the folder?

If so, you can delete anything or all from the folder.

Documents and Settings>%Username%>Right Click on favorites Folder>Properties, and click on Customize Tab. There you can change the icon back to default star or anything else.

Actually it's better now because I did what you said but moved all the bookmarks from the folder that showed a file folder. Now I have all my favorites back except that even though Internet Explorer shows Favorites with the star, IE only shows the favorite sits w/o showing the starred folder???

No, it's better but not correct. If the Favorites are supposed to be designated by that star icon instead of a folder icon, why can't I get it back???

Incidentally, I hope it's not a stupid question, because the effect of having that folder icon instead of the star is that the favorites don't cascade the way they will with the star.

Re: Favorites (Windows XP SP2 IE6)

Me again! I just looked at my home comptuer and I have the same situation, except that all I have are cascading folders for such categories as computer, sweeps, office, personal, etc. - all of which I imported from my old computer - and I don't have one name Favorites (starred or otherwise). So, it looks to me as if when you import your favorites to a new computer, you lose that and can't get it back.

    Thanks

And you tried to change the icon as I suggested in the first post?

Go to Windows Explorer and, click
(Documents and Settings>%Username%>Right Click on favorites Folder>Properties, and click on Customize Tab. There you can change the icon back to default star or anything else )

Re: Favorites (Windows XP SP2 IE6)

I looked at the link and looked at the Windows folder. I have two Favorites folder with a star icon. One is in C:Windowssystem32systemprofiles and the otehr is in C'Documents and SettingsCarolFavorites. They are both exactly the same in that they show up in IE with a star incon and they both have th same folders within that folder.

I guess I can live with this thing if I have to; I just thought it was strange and no amount of Custom resetting gets it back to where it needs to be.

    Thanks for the help.

Re: Favorites (Windows XP SP2 IE6)

I've been following this thread and am somewhat confused as to where the Favorites folder you are trying to access on the new computer is located. I have the "Star" icon in C:/Documents and Setting/My Name, but no folder or star icon in the System32 folder and no systemprofiles folder either. My Favorites folder contains both folders and links. The folders contain links that I have organized into groups, while the other links are usually frequently used or wildcards I've saved for one reason or another.

When I move my favorites from one PC to another I simply copy the contents of the Favorites folder on the old computer to a CD, memory stick or other portable storage medium and then take it to the new computer and using Windows Explorer copy the data into the Favorites folder on the new PC (I always delete what's already there, but that's a personal choice). What happens if you rename the folder in the System32/systemprofiles folder to something like Favorites(old) ?? I'm grabbing at straws here, but will do some Googling and see if I can find a solution.

Re: Favorites (Windows XP SP2 IE6)

I'm going to try this Friday when I get back to the office. Incidentally, when I said I followed the link and tried that, I meant on my home computer; have to wait for Friday to try it at work. It seems to me though that you may have hit on something and perhaps the problem is I have too many My Favorites folders, so I am going to look to get rid of duplicates and see if that doesn't help.

    Thanks again
