Outlook locks up when sending HTML message (2003 SP3)

I've tried all the stuff I have found online (starting in Outlook Today, zone parity, opt in reg change, opt out reg change, etc.) -- once in a while, when sending HTML formatting mail, Outlook just hangs / locks up. I have to crash out of Outlook at that point. When I send or use plain-text it never happens. It seems to be especially true when I reply to certain people, but I can't find a pattern. This started after the stupid IE 7 update, but I'm not sure that is the problem because it doesn't happen all the time, and I've done all the IE 7 fixes. This is extremely frustrating. I use my cell phone as my PDA so I need stupid Outlook for the synchronization capability (otherwise I'd jump ship). My office also synchs everyone's calendar, so I'm locked to Outlook for that, too.
    .
Any ideas to stop Outlook from hanging on the occasional send of HTML messages?
    .
(I have run SCANPST on a regular basis -- sometimes it finds errors, but just now I experienced the lock up and when I ran SCANPST it found no errors at all)

Does your antivirus program scan outgoing mail? If so, try disabling this (scanning) temporarily, to see if that helps.

You can turn on mail logging in Outlook:
    - Select Tools | Options...
    - Activate the Other tab.
    - Click Advanced Options...
    - Tick the "Enable mail logging (troubleshooting)" check box.
    - OK your way out.
    - Quit and restart Outlook.

Log files will be stored in your Temp folder (probably Cocuments and Settings<username>Local SettingsTemp); you must display hidden files and folders to be able to see this folder. The log file may provide information about problems that occur while sending.

Also see How to enable transport logging in Outlook.

Thanks - done - it *says* everything is fine and finishes with okay -- except when it locks up it does not seem to write to the log.

What do you usually use for Format > Send Pictures From the Internet? (That option will embed linked images rather than maintaining them as links in your reply/forward.) You could try using the "other" setting and see whether it makes any difference. (If you use Word as your email editor, this option might be different or missing.)

That's too bad! I hope someone else will come up with a useful suggestion.
