    directory listing to text

anyone have any idea how to copy the name of a file from the directory listing over to a document without copying the entire file? I have 30 .pngs for which I was to create a text list but when I copy and paste, they all open up as pictures.

Karen's Directory Printer is a free utility that lets you save a list of all files in a folder to a text file; it is easy to copy the list from the text file into a Word document or Excel worksheet or wherever you want to use it.

    Re: directory listing to text

Hans, I am seeking a way to list folders and files on a network drive, similar to dir /s>dir.txt from the DOS Shell.

In the DOS Shell, I don't seem to be able to change directories to a network drive, with cd /d drivename. I get "CMD does not support UNC paths as current directories." So I can't run dir /s.

After visiting Karen's Directory Printer site, I could not tell if it would do what I need. At the moment, I'm on a machine without admin rights, so I can't download it and try it.

I have 41,000 folders and files to list, so screen shots would take half a lifetime.

Any ideas or leads would be appreciated. Googling "network drive directory listing" gives the usual thousands of results, which I'm slowly working through.

Karen's directory printer should do what you want.

    In a command window, does

    dir "thisthatother" /s > dir.txt

    work?

Hans, as usual, thanks immensely for the quick reply. I will try the quotes approach and will report back.

In my work environment, it's complicated to jump through all the hoops necessary to purchase, get approval, and install new software, but I will definitely download Karen's s/w and try it in my Home/Office this weekend.

Hans, the quotes around the network drive did the job. Thanks again.
