    Rules Wizard (Outlook 2000)

The "Rules Wizard" normally works just fine. But, the other day, I added another simple rule and it won't work?? Basically, I entered the information from the Sender (I've tried using just the "name" and then the "name" and e-mail address) in the appropriate place, chose the desired folder to have the e-mail transferred to, etc. as I normally do. It doesn't work??

    What needs to be done??

    Baffled,

Is it the first rule to be processed?
If not, check that no other previous rules might apply. I've been caught out by that, especially with the 'Stop processing more rules' option selected <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15> .

Otherwise, are they in your PAB? If not, add them and then try applying the rule to someone 'from people or distribution list'.

rules wiz is very picky about the display name used - maryj is not the same person as mary j - even if the emails are identical.

try using organizer to create rules based on sender - it seems to work correctly when created that way..

Very much agree with Leif and MaryJ. I had a rule the other day which 'didn't work' and it turned out (eventually) that it did work, but another rule then cancelled it out.
You can check whether your underlying 'simple' rule has been set up properly by forcing it to run. Open Rules Wizard, select the rule and click on Run Now. If it works, then the reason it's apparently not working is because of an interaction with other rules. That's how I found my boo boo the other day.

    Re: Rules Wizard (Outlook 2000)

I tried running the run in the inbox with one of those e-mails sitting there. Nothing happened. I don't have that many rules so it wasn't hard to check out each one to make sure there wasn't anything like this one, which I knew there wasn't anyway! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I have deleted that rule I setup manually, and used the "Organize" utility to make it again. When another e-mail arrives from this individual, I'll be able to see if it works... thanks!

    Re: Rules Wizard (Outlook 2000)

The fact that the rule did not trigger when you clicked on Run Now implies that Outlook did not find a match for the condition.
What's the rule say/what are you trying to make happen?

You should be able to test at any time.
Drag the post back into your Inbox and test-run the rule again.

    Re: Rules Wizard (Outlook 2000)

The rule is in fact "simple" <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>. When an e-mail arrives with a specific name in the Subject, it is to be moved to a specified folder. There are no exceptions and/or other parameters in this rule. It is: when an e-mail from xxxxxxxxx arrives, move it to xxxxxxxxxxx's folder. Can't get much simpler than that... <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15> And yes, I made sure that the "Turn this rule on" is checked. hehe

Do you by any chance mean "with a specific name in the Sender field," instead of in the "Subject" field? Perhaps that's what you need to change in your rule?

Duh! <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> Sorry.... but yes, I meant <font color=blue>"with a specific name in the Sender field".</font color=blue>. I have tried both just the name itself as it appears in the header and also the name with the e-mail address as it appears when you send a reply (if you know what I mean? hehe).

That may not necessarily be the true 'From:'
With the mail open, View - Options and see what the header shows.

    Re: Rules Wizard (Outlook 2000)

Personally, I'd try Mary J's way - "try using organizer to create rules based on sender - it seems to work correctly when created that way.." If you select a message from that sender in your inbox and click on "Organize" and in Using Folders choose "Create a rule to move new messages from" and fill in the "Into" what folder box, you should eliminate the problem of the way to enter the name. Hope that helps.

    Re: Rules Wizard (Outlook 2000)

    karniem,

After using the "Organize" utility to make a rule to have these e-mails moved to a specified folder, I ran the "Run Now" in the Wizard. <font color=red>It worked!!</font color=red> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> !! At this point, I would agree, that using the "Organize" utility to setup the rules works great. I've never tried that before.

Thanks to Mary J., you and the others for all your help! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
