    formula (first letter of a cell) (2003)

    I have a spread sheet with the Last Name, First Name and Middle Inital.
    I need to run a formula in the fourth column that will Pull the Last Name and First Initial and Middle Inital.
    I know there is a way to tell it to grab the first letter in a cell vise the entire cell but can not seem to find my notes to do this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    You can use the LEFT function for this: if you have a name (or any text string) in cell A1, the formula
    <code>
    =LEFT(A1,1)
    </code>
    will return the first character of the name.

    I would use a slight midification to Hans' formula just in case the first character in the name is a space. Hans' formula will return the space which I don't think is what you want. The formula below will return the first non-blank character.

    <code>
    =LEFT(TRIM(A1),1)
    </code>

    Thanks, that worked out great for what I was doing.
