    Changing document styles (Word 2003)

    Hi Loungers,

I recently tried to change a feature in my normal template, only to find that the change was reflected in all the styles. I don't have "Automatically update" checked in the Modify Style dialogue box. Does anyone know why Word is doing this and how to turn it off?

    Regards,

    JMT

Every style (except for Normal) is based on another style. You can change the "based on style" in the Modify Style dialog box.

If you make a change to your Normal style then any style based on Normal will change too, similarly if you change the Heading 1 style then it is likely that your other Heading styles are based on Heading 1 and will change too.

In addition to Stuart's reply, you can also set the "Based on" for a style to (no style) - this is the very top entry in the dropdown list. This will make the style you're modifying independent of any other style.

Thank you! I guess I will just not link the style to normal.
