Having a table automatically follow reference (Word 2003 sp3)

I suspect the answer to this is no, but is there any way I can have a table automatically move with the reference to it in the text? (I used to be able to do this easily in wordperfect).

Specifically, we have a report that has a large table which will be placed on a landscape page following reference to the table in the text (i.e., text containing reference on page 2, table following on page 3). We know the text is going to change, and the landscape table will probably end up 2 or 3 pages further along (text containing reference on page 2, table on page 4).

If there is a fairly straightforward way we can do this (none of us are macro literate), we'd be eternally grateful.

Typically you insert a landscape page in a portrait-oriented document by creating a new section for the landscape page. Text does not flow around section breaks, so to fill up the page before the table, you probably will have to manually copy and paste from or to the section after the table. (Unless there is some functionality I'm forgetting... <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>) Best to do this at the end of the editing.

Can you attach a table or figure to a reference in the text if a section break isn't involved?

Not sure what you mean by reference. If you mean a caption directly above or below the table or picture, you can use the Keep with Next property of the appropriate paragraph to keep the caption and table/picture together.

I mean that I reference a table in the text (i.e., Table 4 contains the analytical results of the sampling). I then want Table 4 to follow that reference. In this case, it's a landscape table, so it will be on the following page. I would like the table to always follow that reference to it no matter how much text gets added or deleted around the reference. Attached is a crude example of what I'm talking about. Assume that more text is going to be added to this report before and/or after the Table 4 reference, which might throw the reference onto another page.

This used to be a very simple matter to do in WordPerfect. I have previously researched when we first converted to Word many years ago and found it couldn't be done. I'm assuming it still can't be done, but since I had someone ask me to look into it, I said I would. If it can be done, it would save me (and others) a load of time moving stuff around in reports.

No, I don't think that can be done in Word.
