You need software that will rip a DVD. See dvd ripper - Google Search for links to check. You may also want to hunt around on your PC. If it is an OEM you may already have something that will work.

    The DVDs are home movies.

Thanks, Joe. I just downloaded a DVD decrypter and am giving it a try. I hope it is intuitive.

After I ran the software, there are a bunch of files in a folder, but I don't see how to run the movie from my HD.

To do that you need to create virtual DVDs. A tool like Virtual CD can do this. I suspect there may be free alternatives but I have always been happy with this one.

Just for curiosity, which DVD ripper from Joe's link did you download? I haven't used a virtual DVD product like Stuart's but I don't know if you need it without knowing more about what files you ended up with on your hard drive and which program created them.

Re: Copying DVD to HD (6.0/SP 2)

I got rid of it since I couldn't figure out how to run the movie from my HD. Subesequently, I used Sonic (which came bundled with the computer) which creates an "image" file from which I can burn back to DVDs for backup. The only problem I have with Sonic is it won't let me "finalize disc." When I try to do that, a window appears telling me to insert a DVD-R, which I already did. I even tried re-inserting the DVD.

    Hi

The files that the DVD-ripper you used created on your Hard-drive. Were they of the type .vob and .ifo?
If so, you can use a DVD player software to play the files by choosing 'play from file' andpointing tot the first .ifo file
    Thanks,
