    Unexpected error (IE7 7.0.5730.11)

Within the last week or so I have been getting a dialog when IE closes saying that it has "encountered an unexpected error" and must close, blah, blah, blah. Note that this occurs when I have intentionally closed IE, not when I am using it. This is more of an aggravation than anything else but I would surely like to get rid of that dratted dialog popup. Any help or suggestions would be most apprecieated!!!

    Maine Man,

There is a MS article that describes this error and a few ways to resolve it.

    Check it out at KB293623

    Re: Unexpected error (IE7 7.0.5730.11)

    Bob-

I used Guided Help as per the referenced KB article. This did not appear to do anything. I think I should expand on the problem. It seems only to occur when I have INTENTIONALLY attempted to close IE. In addition to that, IE does not shut down immediately andif I don't mind having that #%$^#@* dialog box on the screen, I can continue to work in the browser as long as I want until I click on the "Send Report" or "Don't Send" button, at which point the browser will, indeed, shut down. I have sent the report several times but have to admit I cannot understand what the details are trying to tell me. Most perplexing!!! I would really like to get this situation cleared up! Any help you or anyone else in the Lounge could provide would, as always, be much appreciated.

How about going to Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing
Check BOTH "Disable Script Debugging" ( IE and Other )

    Also disable Error Reporting by:

    Open System in Control Panel.
On the Advanced tab, click Error Reporting.
    Click Disable error reporting

Perhaps this is related to a toolbar or plugin. Does it occur if you simply start IE, display your home page, and then close it? If so, there may be a problem with one of your toolbars or other add-ins. If that doesn't cause the error, it might be related to viewing particular types of content, such as PDFs, in the browser. Perhaps you can find a pattern that would help with the diagnosis.

    Re: Unexpected error (IE7 7.0.5730.11)

Yes, it does occur if I just open my home page and then close it. I wasn't clear in my last post about being able to continue using IE after getting the dialog. That is only the case if there are two or more windows open. If only one is open, then there is no other option than to close IE. I suspect that you are right that this situation is related to toolbars or add-ins. My only concern with that is that there are so many of the blasted things that to disable them one at a time is going to take a good bit of time and effort. Oh, well......

    Re: Unexpected error (IE7 7.0.5730.11)

More info- I have used the "no add-ons" feature in IE and that seems to cure the problem of the strange shutdown. Now, how do I drill down to find the add-on that is causing the problem among the two dozen or so add-ons I have installed? If I have to disable them one at a time and reboot to check each one, that is going to take half of forever! Anyone have any ideas of how to speed up this process???

    Re: Unexpected error (IE7 7.0.5730.11)

You could use the binary search algorithm:
Turn off the first half of the add-ins.
If the problem is gone, one of the add-ins in the first half is the cause.
Turn on half of the first half again, etc.
If the problem remained, one of the add-ins in the second half is the cause.
Turn off half of the second half, etc.

    Hans-

Looks like an excellent suggestion! I will try that and let you know the results.

    Re: Unexpected error (IE7 7.0.5730.11)

Well, we can call off the dogs on this one! Before I was able to start following through on Hans' suggestion for disabling add-ons the problem disappeared. This was not from anything I did intentionally and, if it WAS something I did, I have not earthly idea what it was. As the old saying goes- "Nothing succeeds like success". Thanks to all who responded to this post. I can only hope the problem does not recur.
