Re: cross references (Word 2002 XP SR3)

    Try this:
    - Select the (first) letter.
    - Select Edit | Copy.
    - Go to the beginning of the second section.
    - Select Edit | Paste Special...
    - Click the Paste Link option then click OK.

If you want the second section to have something else in the header or footer, make sure that you turn off "Same as Previous" for the appropriate header/footer in the Header and Footer toolbar.

cross references (Word 2002 XP SR3)

I have a document. The first section is a letter and the second section is a table.

The 1st letter is formatted with different 1st page and 2nd page headers and footers. and most paragraphs are bookmarked.

in the same document, i need to have the orginial letter in the 1st section. In the 2nd section have a copy of the letter wiht an additional watermark in the headers and a frame. and the 3rd section includes the table.

I thought creating a cross-reference around the first letter would be the easiest.

Ive created a bookmark around the 1st letter. and inserted a cross-reference to the bookmark for the 2nd letter. The result is the headers and footers come across as flat text. In the2nd letter when I insert the watermark and frame at a paragraph mark. When I either refresh fields, or print. the watermarks or frame arent included.

In my 1st letter if I add bookmarks around my headers and footers, and insert a cross-reference into my 2nd lette. again when I refresh fields or print, the headers convert back to plain text.

I thought the best way to handle this would be cross-reference?
    perhaps not?
is there another way to achieve the same result?

    ive attached a sample doc

    thank you

    Hey Hans thank you

    that kinda worked <img src=/S/duck.gif border=0 alt=duck width=23 height=23>

Whats happening is in my template the 1st letter has bookmarked paragraphs. Depending on what options the users select, these bookmarked paragragraphs get removed. The end result is an amended stripped down letter. When I use a hyperlink the orginial bookmarked text is displayed. ie all the text. Even when I refresh fields, or print the doc. The hyperlink doesnt update to reflect the current latest text in the 1st letter

If I click anywhere in the second letter (that has been pasted using the Paste Link option) and press F9, it is updated correctly (i.e. it shows the current version of the first letter).

    Hey Hans

i dont get the same results. The 1st letter is the edited/cut down version. The 2nd letter is the full version of the 1st letter.
when i update fields F9 - the 2nd letter still doesnt update to display the current version of the 1st letter

    I have no idea.

Have others tried something like this? I have attached the document with a Paste Link'ed copy of the first letter.

Oops - I think I know what's happening. The Link field created by Paste Special with the Paste Link option stores the path of the document. But if I remember correctly, you're using a document management system; so the document isn't where Word thinks it is. So perhaps a cross reference is better, after all. See attached version. The copy will not update automatically, as with the Link version, but it should update when you print (preview) or click in the copy and press F9.

Re: cross references (Word 2002 XP SR3)

    Thanks Hans

I was working with a couple of links .

the 1st link was to the document. i noticed my 2nd test link was to the actual template - although im not quite sure how i managed to do that.

I went back to using the cross-reference field. my orginial concern with using cross-referernces was the headers and footers didnt update. however this time it appeared to work. *dunno why* <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

    thank you again for your help Hans <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
