    Firefox... doesn't work (2.0.0.7)

I turned my laptop on today and opened up FF as i usually do after a meeting i had. FF opened, but then it just hung, and wouldn't open the home page - it also was trying to open a home page that wasn't my default. Furthermore, my bookmarks are all gone and i can't connect to any webpage using FF. What the heck is going on? I'd hate to lose all those bookmarks i had, so as long as i can recover those i don't care if i have to re-install FF.

Recovering your bookmarks should be quite simple, Firefox automatically creates 5 backup copies. For details see http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Lost+Bookmar...ookmark_backups

For possible causes of Firefox hanging see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs
Another thing to check, go to your profile folder and see if you have multiple sequentially numbered files. This can cause Firefox to become very slow and is typically caused by security software not playing well with Firefox. If you do have such files post back with details.

If the above does not help there are further things that can be tried.

In addition to following Tony's leads, I think you might also check for a possibly corrupt <big>prefs.js</big> file. On more than one occasion, my son has had Fx circumstances similar to what you describe and I've found a prefs file on his machine, the beginning of which was pretty corrupt. Don't know how it happened, but fortunately, I've had him backing up his prefs file nightly so we were able to recover.

thanks for the responses tony & Al. i actually managed to fix it in the meantime although both your comments are very valid to my situation. i did what Tony suggested after searching for bookmark backups since i figured FF must do this, and i got lucky and found them. importing them were easy, but FF still hung on start up. turns out my company proxy was gone so i'm guessing Al is right with his explanation of prefs.js getting corrupted. i copied the proxy from IE and tossed in FF which seemed to do the trick. i didn't lose any cookies which is nice so i'm all set now, thanks!
