Time Synchronization (XP SP2 IE 7)

Almost ALL of the time when I attempt to sync my system time clock manually, I get the error message shown below. I have no idea if the automatic update works, although the time does seem correct or close to being correct.
Same thing occurs using either time,nist.gov or time,windows.com. It gives NO indication just what the error might be, so any ideas about this?
    Any alternate sites to try?

I have gotten the exact same response. Never took the trouble to find out why.
Maybe we live in a time warp.

Are you typing the coma, like you have in your last post?
    "time,nist.gov or time,windows.com"

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Time Synchronization (XP SP2 IE 7)

    Paul,
I may have found the solution to this on my own.
I read that the default time servers that come with XP are not very reliable and that better alternatives would be:
    time-a.nist.gov
    time-b.nist.gov
    time-a.timefreq.bldrcol.gov

I tried quite a number of attempts with time-b.nist.gov and every attempt was sucessful. So, I went into regedit and drilled down to HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionDateTimeServers.
Changed the Value Data to time-b.nist.gov from time.windows.com.
Changed the default to Name 1
Added the alternate New value data as 3 and time-a.nist.gov

The three new choices now show up in the drop down box in Internet time change.

The new reg settings look like this now.

Re: Time Synchronization (XP SP2 IE 7)

    Jeff,
I did try that but it but it would revert back to the defaults after the next try even after clicking "Apply".
    Hence the reg changes.

Edited by HansV to remove HUGE amount of useless white space from image.

Well done, you beat me to it as I've been looking for a solution. But what I tried and it seems to work is just type or paste one of your time servers address in the time and date properties box. Be sure to click apply befor then synchronising

In the UK, I have found uk.pool.ntp.org to be reliable. See here for more information on pool.ntp.org. Or have a look at this page for time servers in the US.

Re: Time Synchronization (XP SP2 IE 7)

    I would second Stuart's endorsement of uk.pool.ntp.org.

I compiled a list of about 20-or-so working UK secondary time servers a year or two back when I was playing with the command-line program CMDTIME, but every so often one would go offline, and I found that uk.pool.ntp.org didn't suffer (so much) from that problem.

Well that is strange. Just checked mine again and it is holding ok. Annoying when different machines act differently and there doesn't appear to be any logic to it! However at the end of the day you have managed to find a solution to a problem that seems fairly widespread.

    Bob

I seem to remember reading somewhere a few weeks ago that both time.nist.gov and time.windows.com were not doing time syncing properly, but maybe they have now been fixed?

Later... Further thought makes me remember that this was for accesses from outside the US...

Re: Time Synchronization (XP SP2 IE 7)

    John,
That may be so for outside the US but it sure doesn't seem that way for within the US. The persistent errors that I was receiving were the reason for my posting the thread just a few days ago.

    It does seem to be OK using the alternates as mentioned above. SO FAR! <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16> <img src=/S/time.gif border=0 alt=time width=32 height=48>

I had that same problem most of the time.
But not all the time, luckily.

    Reviving old threads, are we?
I see you(?) removed your reply from the thread starting at <post:=692,248>post 692,248</post:>, the problem was already solved.

Yes, having problem with the time all the time, wouldn't be fun.
