    Storm worm

Interesting article entitled In millions of Windows, the perfect Storm is gathering in this weekend's Observer newspaper.

Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - yes, it's possible! Warning: it's an 1.38 MB download.

This Powerpoint presentation may be of further interest.

    http://noh.ucsd.edu/~bmenrigh/exposing_storm.ppt (can't make it clickable because it's a download)

What I'm not clear from all this is: do the standard AV programs (in my case, AVG) protect and clear this Storm?

The simple answer would be Yes - provided that your AV is kept updated. Every AV manufacturer is very well aware of the danger posed by this worm...

The other answer would be: the offense always has the advantage, the defense always is playing catch-up, and therefore we don't have a clear picture of how this will play out. Keeping patched up against known vulnerabilities, and taking care with exposure to potentially damaging files through rigorous configuration and self-discipline, may in the end be more critical than any of our anti-virus defenses. The problem is that this is not just about our individual PCs. We share a network with our neighbors, and numerous servers around the world hold our personal and financial information. Everyone needs to develop a strong sense of security awareness or we will not be able to stop this thing in a manner consistent with the maintenance of personal liberty.
