Saving changes to Normal.dot (Word 2003)

    Dear Woody's Lounge,

Today, I was exiting Word when it asked me if I wanted to save the changes I made to Normal.dot. When I clicked "yes," it told me that Normal was read-only. But how could this be? I specifically remember having made changes to the Normal template and having saved them. In fact, I have proof: whenever I create a new document based on Normal, the tabs are set to .25, which didn't come with pre-packaged version of Normal. So what's the deal?

    Start Windows Explorer.
First, make sure that you display hidden files and folders, in the View tab of Tools | Folder Options...
Then locate your Normal.dot. The default location is in the folder

    Cocuments and Settings<username>Application DataMicrosoftTemplates.

Right-click Normal.dot and select Properties in the pop-up menu.
If the Read-only check box is ticked, then clear it. Click OK.

    Now try again in Word.

How odd; Normal.dot is NOT set to read only. I nevertheless get this message. I will check to see if this happens again next time I try to save a change to Normal. Meanwhile, feel free to let me knwo if you have any other comments to add.

    Sincerely,

    JMT

    Hi JMT,

Is Word set as your email editor in Outlook? Was it running before you started Word?

If so, Outlook has normal.dot open. If you close Outlook then try to close Word -- it still won't work because the second iteration of normal.dot is still a copy. This is one of the reasons I don't use Word as my email editor.

But if you must, always open Word before you open Outlook. Then Word will have opened normal.dot first and have control over it.

    HTH, Kim

I think I do sometimes open Outlook before I open Word, but I am not sure if there is any correlation. In other words, I am not sure that the instances that Word doesn't save my changes to Normal.dot are the instances in which I opened Outlook first, but I will keep a watchful eye.
