Avast Bootscan

    Hello Again,

Norton AV is gone, Avast is loaded and busily creating the Virus Recovery Database. Apparently I made a bad choice during the install. I clicked Yes to run the bootscan on startup. Every time. Not. I see that I can click Esc to terminate the bootscan, but I'd like to turn it off and I can't find that option. The "Schedule Boot Time Scan" screen doesn't show that the full scan at startup has been set. Anyone know how I can turn it off?

The install also suggested that the WebShield feature of ZA be turned off since it is not compatible with Avast's WebShield. It offered a link to "make your browser work with WebShield turned off" which didn't link to anything. Should ZA's WebShield be turned back on, presumably by searching the Avast site for the information that refused to link?

Any other suggestions for changing settings? Looked for a smilie that was "sweating". We don't have one.

    Re: Avast Bootscan

I never turned it on, so I tried a test just now and DID turn it on. When it asked permission to reboot, I said NO! Then I went back to the menu and it said that a boot time scan was already scheduled and offered me the choice you see in this screenshot. (I hope I've now turned it off!) I guess if you're not getting the selection, you COULD un-install Avast and start again (hopefully).

What is the "webshield" feature of ZA? I use the free version and don't see that exact wording on any of my ZA screens.

    Re: Avast Bootscan

Aw, man, I don't want to do a do-over. Perhaps if I try to schedule a second startup bootscan it will give me the same message you got and a "no" will unschedule the thing. Worth a try. If it doesn't work, I'll ask Avast for instructions.

My memory was insufficient. The WebShield is in Avast, in ZA it is called "Privacy Control". Here is what Avast's site says about it: "Under certain conditions, it is necessary to bypass the WebShield's transparent proxy and set things up manually. This includes the following situations: If you are using ZoneAlarm with Privacy Control turned on. The current version of WebShield's transparent proxy is incompatible with ZA's Privacy Control features." Some further clicking and they give the instructions to set the proxy manually (Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings). It all seems to involve whether one can access their webmail. I mean, there you are in the middle of the install, you can't do any research, and it says "do this or it won't work" so you click OK.

    Re: Avast Bootscan

BigAl--OMG, it was a ONE-TIME startup bootscan! Wish they would have said "one-time" in the install. Avast has a nice user forum. Seems that several others were trying to disable boot scans and one of the moderator answers alluded that after a successful bootscan, it has to be rescheduled to happen again. There was even a register location where it is set. So I did a soft boot, and it was gone. Then I did a hard boot and it was gone.

I'm noticing that my startup is much faster now that Norton is gone. Thanks for recommending Avast. So far, so good.
