    XML in Office 2003 (Office 2003)

    Hi,

    We're an Office Xp shop. An AD team wants to use Excel 2003 and XML. Thet are having trouble installing Excel and getting XML to work. I don't have any more details than this.

    The question I have is how is XML installed. I did a manual install of Office 2003 Prof but didn't find any places to select for XML. From some postings here I see that Office Professional is preferred (required for XML?) ovder Standard - correct?

    Also, can setupexl.exe be used or setupstd.exe or setuppro.exe (and use a custom installation installing just Excel).

    Ultimately, the AD area will want to do the installs automatically (eg pushed by Castanet). Therefore, will a installation wizard be needed (in the case of doing a custom install of the suite).

    All suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    I think all ones needs to do is a "Save As" and select the XTM format.

    Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Hi Jimmy

    XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language and is an open standard for exchanging structured documents and data over the internet. The layout of the data is similar to this:

    <?xml version="1.0" standalone="no" ?>
    <!DOCTYPE NFLDSTAT SYSTEM "NFLDSTAT.dtd">
    <NFLDSTAT>
    <DATE>2007-08-20</DATE>
    <SOURCE office="MF" />
    <PRECORD gender="M">
    <P_CODE>BearJ</P_CODE>
    <P_MAIN>42</P_MAIN>
    </PRECORD>
    <PRECORD gender="F">
    <P_CODE>BearM</P_CODE>
    <P_MAIN>41</P_MAIN>
    </PRECORD>
    </NFLDSTAT>

    XML is not installed but comes as part of the Office Excel 2003 suite and is used in the interoperability of web applications and desktop software.

    The above XML file can be imported to the excel spreadsheet usingData | Import External Data | Import Data and then select XML files

    You can experiment with this using the file I have attached in a zip file

    I'm not sure what is missing in your setup. Programmers who want to read or write XML files often rely on the Microsoft XML DLL, which has been updated numerous times. If you find that you need to download this library, you could try here:
    <UL><LI>Download details: MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (Microsoft XML Core Services) 6/2/2003
    <LI>Download details: Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 7/12/2006[/list]Note that some programs may depend on specific versions, so you might consider the vintage in deciding whether to forego earlier versions.

    If those libraries already exist or don't help, then a specific error message or more detailed information on where the expected functionality is falling short, would be helpful.

    Thanks for the file; it was very helpful in testing my installations,

    And thanks to the other who also replied.
