Captcha superseded by cats?

Most people have come across CAPTCHAs, e.g. , those difficult-to-decipher collections of skewed and obscured letters and numbers that websites want you to type in to verify that you are a human person and not a spam robot. How long before the spammers devise means of cracking these (if they haven't already)?

But now a more-difficult-for-computers recognition mechanism is proposed - pictures of cats and dogs! (And, yes, the initialism ASIRRA is just about as specious as was CAPTCHA!)

I think I'd prefer to pick out the cats from a group of cats and dogs rather than numbers and letters any day! And how easy would it be to write a program to tell these apart, especially when there are millions of possible pictures available? Looks to me that Microsoft Research may be onto a winner here...

Thanks, John, for the link. I've asked my tech person to review this and advise me about replacing our CAPTCHA with ASIRRA. I've always hated the CAPTCHA system because I often have difficulty determining whether, for example, a letter is uppercase of lowercase, and even what the letter is (failing eyesight in my old age ). I definitely like this system.

One problem I see is that the images are small and some of them it is hard to tell what is in the image.

I'm sure in favor of websites using ASIRRA versus those funny looking letters and numbers in CAPTCHA. I'm in agreement with Rich, sometimes I can really mess them up and then I have to start over. The only change I would make is switching what is picked since I prefer dogs over cats!

    Thanks for an interesting link!

Purrrrrfect - a few 'woof woof's and the kitties will scramble! and for the chuckle!
