Can't play MPG files (Windows XP Media Center with Service Pack 2)

Our desktop PC will not play MPG files which work perfectly well on our two laptops. These have been produced from a SONY video camera, and I also downloaded an MPG files from the internet which had the same problem.
Windows Media Player gives a fault C00D11B1 which seems to relate to the soundcard not working.
Real Player gives the message 'A general error has occurred'
The computer plays sound and video from the internet, e.g. news and other programmes from the BBC.

Is your system up-to-date patch wise? What version of Media Player? You ought to check some of the threads at Windows Media Newsgroups. There seem to be quite a few causes for this error.

There are hundreds of hits for this on the news groups and various bulleting boards. It appears that it is not Real or Media Player that is the fault but possibly the Firewall you have. Try temporarily disabling the Firewall and see if you can view it. It may also be because you PC is trying to download Codecs for the actual clip. Have you an up to date set of codecs installed?

Re: Can't play MPG files (Windows XP Media Center

I have disabled the firewalls, but no joy. I have looked at the threads about this error, and there appear to be hundreds of suggestions, most f which don't appear to work.
My Windows Media Player is up-to-date. I'm not sure how to check the codecs.
The files do not work with RealPlayer in the desktop, but do work with RealPlayer on the laptop. Could this be the same codec problem?
    Thanks

Re: Can't play MPG files (Windows XP Media Center

    Back again.
I have identified the codecs as 'CyberLink Audio Codec' and CyberLink Video /SP decoder DELL 5.3' by playing the file on the laptop. These are inlcuded in the MPEG codecs on the laptop Windows Media Player.
The codecs are not on the desktop and I have not been able to locate them anywhere on the web.
    Help.....

Copy them from the desktop to the laptop and see if that works. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

I can't find any files calls CyberLink**** anywhere. There is a Cyberlink directory but no files which I can identify as codecs.
