Are master documents safe? (Word 2003)

I'm working on a really large document for the first time in many, many years. It would be helpful if I could break it up into several parts, tied together by a master document.

The last time I did this type of work, master documents were considered a disaster waiting to happen. (Or not waiting.) Has Microsoft got them right yet? Are they safe to use?

    Hi jsachs,

The jury's still out on Word 2007, but the master document 'feature' in all earlier versions are still considered unsafe.

FWIW, you can get virtually the same functionality via INCLUDETEXT and RD fields.
