MS Installer keeps popping up (WINXP Version 2002 SP2)

    Hi All,
I'm trying to help out a friend whose machine is having Windows Installer issues.
When trying to: send an email through Outlook Express, Search, Open Word, Excel, etc.... the Windows Installer dialog box show with the "Preparing to Install..." message.
Oulook Express will load, let you write a new email, then Send it before the Windows Installer dialog box shows. Then, after about 4 minutes or so, that closes, only to have an Outlook Express dialog popup stating that "The spell check on this document was halted. Do you want to send anyway?"

When opening Word through <Start><All Programs> the installer window appears and after about 2 minutes or so the following error appears:
"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows patch package."

Some of the Event Viewer Application errors are:

I'm pretty unsure as to where to start. Directions and suggestions will be most appreciated.
    Thank you.

Most of the items in the event log refer to missing files in an Office11 folder. This is for Office 2003. Is Office 2003 installed on this PC? If so, try performing a repair installation of Office 2003.

Re: MS Installer keeps popping up (WINXP Version 2002 SP2)

    Hi Hans,
Sorry for the delay. I've been trying to do this remotely and schedules between me and the "helpee" haven't meshed very well. I finally got a chance to dig into this very late last night.
I wasn't able to do any kind of repair, from anywhere....couldn't even change or uninstall from "Add/Remove Programs". I believe that Office was totally confused about patches/updates because there were 2 Office loads on the machine (folders MIcrosoft Office and Microsoft Office(2) - I certainly have no-clue how that happened). So I had to use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, deleted all the folders and was able re-load Office (from the System Recovery partition). So far everything looks and acts as it should. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>
    Thank you.
