Formula sum (Excel 2007)

I am trying to get a formula that counts the number of letter "f'" of "FN" in colum b
I keep getting a value error
    I have tried =SUM(IF(B2:B366,"f" or "FN"),1,0)
    and I have tried =SUMIF(b2:b366,"f",1,0)
column b has either empty cells or cells with letter f or cells with letter fn etc.
The Countif function seems to give sum result but can't get it to check 2 different values ie 1 fo f and 1 for fn and 0 for anything else, correct
    Thanks

    Re: Formula sum (Excel 2007)

To count, you must use COUNTIF, not SUMIF, and you must use two separate COUNTIFs:

    =COUNTIF(B2:B366,"F")+COUNTIF(B2:B366,"FN")

If there are no other values that begin with F, you can use

    =COUNTIF(B2:B366,"F*")

Finally, if there are no other values than (blank), "F" and "FN", you can use

    =COUNTA(B2:B366)
