    Dragging cell changes (Excel 2003)

In the past I was able to drag the cell handle across rows or columns and have the formula change accordingly. For example dragging a formula in in a row that might read B15*B16 would result in B16*B17 in the next row below. Now when I drag the formula it just copies and the formula remains the same. How can I correct this?

If you move a cell by dragging its border, the formula will not change.
If you drag the fill handle in the lower right corner of the cell, the relative references (such as B15) in the formula should change, while absolute references (such as $B$15) should remain the same.
Are you sure that your cell contains a formula? B15*B16 is not a formula, but a text value. Formulas begin with =.

Yes I am sure it is a formula that begins with an equal sign, and I am dragging the cell handle. (I do not have any absolute references.) I have tried the same thing on my laptop and it performs as I expected. I have tried a simple experiment by putting different text in the first few rows, A1, A2, A3. Then entering =A1 in the next row and dragging it down. The text does not change and the value or text in all the subsequent rows are the same. Again my laptop works as i would expect.

I did not see anything in that posting that relates to my problem. Excel starts properly. I opened an old Excel file to see if the problem presents itself in a spreadsheet I created sometime ago when the drag function was working properly. It does. It worked properly when I created that file.

Problem solved <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30> Tools - Options - Calculation: changed from Manual to Automatic, fixed the problem.

That should not affect the formula: It should only affect the value displayed. When dragging with manual calculation, the values stay the same as the source, but the formula is copied and it takes a calculation to match the value with the formula.
