    Auto Numbering Page X of Y (Word 2003 sp3)

    Is there a way you get Word to begin counting pages with the second section? I have a report which they want numbered page x of y, but beginning with the second section. Right now, the only way I can do that is to manually type in the y part of the equation, since Word counts all of the pages (and I end up with page 40 of 44 on the last page).

    You can use a {NUMPAGES} field to get the total number of pages in a document, and you can do calculations with that. So you could try using something like {{NUMPAGES}-5} if say your first section were 5 pages long. If you want to automate the number of pages in the first section rather than just insert 5 or whatever, you could put a bookmark on the last page of the first section and then use a {PAGEREF} field to get the page number of that page. So maybe something like {{NUMPAGES }- { PAGEREF Bookmark [* Format Switch ] }}

    I'm guessing a bit here. Maybe someone will come along shortly who is more sure of the details, but perhaps this will give you some ideas to play with.

    It's more than 2 sections (15 total sections). Oh no! Arithmatic!

    Thanks Ian! I've printed your suggestion, and I'll give it a try tomorrow.

    Stuart, is this what you meant by arithmatic? The document is 15 sections total, and the first section is 6 pages long.

    Put a { SECTIONPAGES } field somewhere in the first section.
    Put a bookmark around this field - called for example Sec1Pages

    In the other sections you can use { PAGE } of {={ NUMPAGES }-{ REF Sec1Pages } }

    If you ONLY have two sections then you can use { PAGE } of { SECTIONPAGES }, if you have more than two sections then we'll have to do some arithmetic in a field.

    Hi Stuart,

    If you use a field coded as {SET Sec1Pages { SECTIONPAGES }}, that will hide the SECTIONPAGES field, which you might not want to have on display in the first section.
