Editing graphics for insertion into Word document

After reading this <post:=674,452>post 674,452</post:>, I was curious to see what was actually inserted in a word document by using the technique Hans suggested and found not one but two .jpg files of different sizes but of the same picture. The inserted pic was edited with IrfanView and reduced in file size by cropping it and saving it as a .jpg with reduced quality. So my curiosity begins and I ask myself why are two files included? After a bit of experimenting, I see that if I uncheck "Keep original Exif data" in the options when I do the save of the edited picture, then I do rectify the problem of two .jpg files being embedded within the word document.

But I have a question - would I ever have a need to "keep original Exif data"? What would I ever use it for? So long as I have the original picture, there wouldn't be a need, would there?

You don't need the Exif (Extended information) data in a picture in Word - it's information such as when was the picture taken, what was the camera model, what was the exposure time etc. This is nice to keep in the original picture, but useless (even potentially embarrassing) in Word.

Okay so why would there be two .jpg files created when this option is checked but only one when the choice is removed? I would have thought the information would be embedded within one file and the program wouldn't need to create a second one?

    Thanks for your reply!

I reckon it is the programmer of IrfanView who has control over how the data is saved depending on the options chosen. Now my curiosity questions whether other graphic programs replicate this type of saving technique.

Thanks for taking time to reply!
