Update Checker

FileHippo has come out with a new version ( beta ) of it's popular FILE CHECKER

Ver. 1.017 beta.
The beta version tests out fine and is a handy utility to scan your system and report any updates or newer versions of any apps installed on your system. Seems to be kept up to date.
it's a tiny 120kb prog and doesn't require an install. Just run the exe.

Re: Update Checker

I rely on Woody's Lounge to tell me about updates to popular programs, what do I need File Checker for?

Oh wait - that's what you guys use to fill all these "new version" posts!

Re: Update Checker

Just as you don't want to rely on one Malware checker to notify you of new slipperyware, both the Lounge AND these checkers keep you right up to the minute on new versions.

Re: Update Checker

I quite like these kinda apps - there was another one around called Big SomethingOrOther??? I used a while back. The only drawback I've experienced is if I've installed the last ware version of a product that's gone commercial. If I forget that fact, I can dive in and end up with nagging shareware.

Re: Update Checker

I've never found one of these that really works very well. The File Hippo one shows like 3 updates for me and I have at least 500+ applications installed. And I know that many of them are not all up to date.

Re: Update Checker

Wow, that's a very large number of programs you've got there. Do you have any time for sleeping once in awhile?

I was pretty impressed with the accuracy of the FileHippo program. It shows 17 updates needed on my machine (XP MCE), where MY Start Menu shows somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 entries, but I didn't really count them. Some of the "downlevels" that it shows are for programs that I know I'm downlevel on like Real Player, Flash Player, Quicktime, Shockwave Player and a number of others.

Can you (would you) share the names of a few of yours that it doesn't point out, where you feel the app is pretty well known, so I can see if we have something in common? I'm sure that their database doesn't include LOTS of less well known software - there's too much out there to cover. And of course, you could always try to write to them with your comments and suggestions.

PS Just for the heck of it, I looked at the software list generated by Belarc Advisor and it's got over 200 entries for what I estimated above to be "about" 100 Start Menu programs. Some common apps are shown three or four times by Belarc, so it depends on WHERE you do your counting!

Re: Update Checker

You clearly do not understand what the filehippo program is for. It was never intended to check all of your installed programs, instead it checks for a select number of programs that the filehippo site lists and notifies you of updates for those programs.

Re: Update Checker

I installed the lasted beta version of the Update Checker by FileHippo, it was version 1.29. The shortcut it left on my desktop failed to open the program so I uninstalled it and ran the one without the installer.

If you or someone else can provide me with a link to a download site (with one that works) I will be interested in using it.

Thanks for all your hep over these many years.

Re: Update Checker

You've just stumbled on a 13 month old thread?

I just ran the download and it worked as advertised - resulting in a nice list of what it considers outdated software on my drive. I used the OLD link provided by Bob. I suggest you try again.

Re: Update Checker

As Al said, that old link will still get you the updated copy of File Hippo Checker.

When you run it, you have to give it a minute to start up and check your files against it's database of updates.
So chill out a bit and give the program a chance to do it's thing.
