    Add Office 2007-gotchas? (2003, 2007)

    Hi All,

I know this question has been asked because I searched the Lounge to find the answer. It deals with adding Office 2007 (I just bought a copy of 2007 Student & Teacher Pro) to a PC already running 2003.

What I found looks encouraging. The "gotchas" I saw in the Lounge postings, after going thru about 3 or 4 windows worth of Search results, were:
    1. No problem as long as the 2 versions are installed in different folders. No problem since 2003 is already installed and 2007 installs in a different folder anyway.
    2. Install in order of oldest to newest. No problem since 2003 is already installed.
    3. Double clicking an Office file (or using Open in the shortcut menu) will open the file in either the application already running or the latest version installed if none is running. To correct this, use Office Repair in the older version to re-register the older version as the program to open.
    4. You can only have one version of Outlook (not a problem since I don't use Outlook on this machine, I use Outlook Express; I only "play" with Outlook for learning purposes on this machine).
    5. When opening a mail attachment of an Office file from Windows Mail, it opens in 2007. Also not a problem.

That's all I've seen. However, I know that Search results depend on the search string you use.

So, with all the accumulated knowledge of the Lounge, the question is simple: did I miss anything that will make me regret not looking further?

    TIA

    Fred

    I think that's about it.

If you want to open an Office file in a specific version, I'd simply start the appropriate application first.

    Thanks Hans.

I'll probably struggle with 2007 until I get the hang of it. I usually open the app by opening the file. In fact, sometime I just open any file to get the app open and then do what I want to in the app, which has nothing to do with the file I just opened. Not very gracious for sure and maybe using 2007 will get me off that bad habit.

Your number 3 does not work the same for me. Instead, double clicking an Office file (or using Open in the shortcut menu) will open the file in either the application already running or the last version that was run. It has worked this way for the past few years on some of my clients' computers, and it works this way on my computer now.

I find this behavior very convenient, as I often have several documents that I need to work on in one particular version. Starting from Explorer is more convenient for me, and it is easier to track my progress through multifile jobs in Explorer.
Note: I can be working on Word 2003 and Excel 2007 at the same time. --I have deliberately avoided even trying to use two version of the same application at once.

    Hi Pam,

That would be good to have #3 work the way you described. I don't recall who provided the post on #3 on the Lounge but it seems to make sense from a Registry point of view if there's no program running at the time.

    Thanks.

With #3, I do not think that the repair even needs to be run, as each time a version is opened Word does a mini-install to up date the registry.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
