UsedRange includes hidden empty columns (2003 SP2)

The attached file is a desensitised version of something that has been baffling me for the last 4 hours.

'Problem Sheet' is a worksheet that I wish to hide all columns to the right of AB. However, whenever I do this it gives me a UsedRange of $1:$38 instead of $A$1:$AB$38, if I then go through all the usual methods to reset the UsedRange I will get back to $A$1:$AB$38 but the minute I try and hide the columns (without doing anything else) the used range is again $1:$38. If I hide all but column IV, the used range is then $A$1:$IU$38.

This problem is one that existed in the original workbook on some but not all of the worksheets, 'Sheet1' in this workbook performs exactly as I expect it to.

Has anyone encountered this problem before or know of a way to fix it?

    Thanks,

    Select columns AC:IV.
    Select Edit | Delete.
    Select columns AC:IV.
Select Format | Column | Hide.
The used range should now be A1:AB38.

    Hans,

This was one of the many things I tried yesterday to no avail. However, I just tried it again and today it works.

    Thanks,
