    Mutating page breaks (Word 97)

I've been having a problem with Next Page Breaks mutating to Continuous/Odd Page/Even Page breaks. I know they were right when I inserted them, but they change, either while I'm working on the document or between the time I save/close it and open it again.

    1) anyone know what causes it and how to prevent it?
    2) anyone know how to change them back? When I try to delete it, of course, it migrates up the document and I end up reformatting every section.

Disregard Question 2) -- I found it. [File menu, Page Setup, Page Layout tab.] Still wondering how to prevent it, though.

Check the following thread to find a discussion on why and how to prevent the problem you describe. <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wrd&Number=53612&page=& view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post53612>Post 53612</A>

Thanks! I only searched for "page break" threads, guess I should have been more creative.

I've been inserting the break, hitting enter a couple of times, then playing with page layout - I'll try the "new page" setting, too.

    Hi Sarah,

This is a small bug in Word 97 that was corrected in one of the Post Service Releases, specifically the Leap Year fix.

To correct this problem, download the lastest Post Service Release and install it. Note that the patches are cumulative and the most recent will include those bugs fixed in the Leap Year patch.

Also note that you need to have SR1 and SR2 installed before installing the Post Service Release. Here is some information for obtaining all three:

    SR1: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/9798/sr1off97detail.aspx>http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/9798...ff97detail.aspx</A>
    SR2: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/sr2off97detail.aspx>http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798...ff97detail.aspx</A>
    Post Service Release (aka SR3)

Re: Mutating page breaks (Word 97)

After downloading all the updates, and habitually installing one more section than I think I'll need, de-linking all the headers/footers, and typing a [one word] paragraph in each section before I insert the next break, the mutation rate has dropped drastically -- about 10% on the documents that are pure portrait orientation. I can correct that much on the final "glitch patrol", when I check for random weirdness that has spawned while I wasn't looking. Thanks, everyone-- it's *such* a pleasure to be able to beat Word into submission!
