    Reappearing system tray icons (SP2)

I've just enabled hide inactive icons to try and remove the annoying network cable unplugged icons for my wired and bluetooth networks. Unfortunately they keep reappearing when I restart the computer (not every time), and their setting has changed back from "Always Hide" to "Hide when inactive".

I know the system tray can be a bit temperamental, but most threads seem to be about icons disappearing, not reappearing!

Why is this happening, and can I make the settings stick by some manual manipulation?

    Thanks

How are you trying to turn them off?

Have you looked at the properties of these icons?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Via Settings-Taskbar and start menu-customise, then finding the two network icons I'm not using, and changing the "Behaviour" to Always Hide. As you can see from the attached, one of them has stuck on the last reboot (but does not always), and the other hasn't.

It is possible to prevent the icons appearing by disabling these network adaptors, but I'd rather not. Whilst it's no big deal to disable the wired adaptor, as if I forget to re-enable it before I plug my network cable in (should I ever have need to resort to it), I can re-enable it and all will work. But if I forget to reenable the bluetooth network before plugging my bluetooth adaptor in. Lots of misery and rebooting ensues.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Why don't you disable the notification? Go to Network Connection. Right click the connection and select properties. Make sure that both check boxes at the bottom of the general tab are clear. OK your way out. BTW, I'm pretty sure the one notification keeps popping up because it has no title. XP can't keep track of it without a title.

    Thanks Joe,

The notification preferences only seem to apply to the connected connection icon. The network connection disconnected icon is immune to these instructions (I've checked). Although the "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" box suggests it would control the network cable unplugged icon, it doesn't (and that seems to be most people's experience).

I don't understand why the connection sometimes has no title, and sometimes shows as Bluetooth Network Connection. I agree that the no title might be an issue, but it clearly isn't the whole story: the other connection frequently forgets its status as well, and it's always called Local Area Connection A network cable is unplugged.

Where does window store this information? Does anyone know?

    Thanks

    Hi Joe,

I've been doing exactly what the first article describes, and it works for that session, but forgets it's setting on rebooting - but not consistently (about 90% of the time).

I don't have any adaptors with any properties that appear to involve teaming or grouping, and don't see any behaviour to suggest that they exist.

    Still a mystery!
