Footnote Symbols (MS Word 2003)

I have been trying to insert a symbol in the footnote instead of numbers, but no matter what I do, it keeps on inserting numbers. These are the steps I do: Insert, Reference, Footnote, Symbol, *, Insert. Is there something I am supposed to do that I am not doing?

Have you tried quitting and restarting Word?

Have you tried selecting * † ‡ § ... from the Number Format dropdown?

Yes, I have tried it, but it does not work.

Yes, I have also selected the * † ‡ § ... from the dropdown list.
