Embedding AVI in Word 2003 (Word 2003 SP2)

    Hello Hard Working Loungers.

Is there anyway to embed an avi into Word 2003? I have read other threads regarding this with previous versions. It appears the only way to embed the object is with VB code.
I don't know any VB code.

    Can Word 2007 do this?

    Any help greatly appreciated! <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

You can use Insert | Object with the From File option, or you can drag an .AVI file from Windows Explorer into a Word document.
Double click the inserted object (or right-click and select Video clip object | Play from the popup menu) to play it.
This should work in any version of Word.

Hi Hans, thanks for the quick reponse.

That works but my problem is it need to embed the *.avi into the document. In other words a copy within the document itself. Unfortunately when I distrubute this document it prompts for the location of the avi.

Make sure that you don't tick the check box "Link to file" in the Create from File tab.
You can check afterwards in Word:
    - Click once on the video object to select it.
    - Press Shift+F9 to display field codes.
    - If you see { EMBED ... } the video is embedded, if you see { LINK ... } it is linked to the source file.
    - Press Shift+F9 to hide the field codes again.

    Hi again Hans,

yes sir. it says Embed Avi when I highlight and change to field codes it but it doesn't actually embed the file. Once I send the file to someone else it's still looking for the avi.

Oh well. I guess I know to use Power Point for documenting next time

    Have a better one.

You're correct. I hadn't actually tried it, but Word indeed looks for the source file even though the field says 'EMBED'. Sorry for the red herring!
