Invalid sheet name error (office 2003 SP3)

We recently switched to Office 2003 from Office 2000. I had a problem with decimals that Hans was gracious enough to solve for me. Our tech people did not install the Service pack. LOL I use Crystal Reports (Version 7.01) to access our various databases and then export the data to Excel. Since we have gone to 2003 I am getting an error message about bad data in the excel file when I try to open it. It gives me a couple of error screens which sound worse than the problem is. In the end it is telling me I have an invalid sheet name and it then repairs the invalid sheet name to recovered_sheet1. When the data is exported from Crystal the sheet name is Sheet1. How can that be an invalid sheet name? I opened a report on a computer still running 2000 and I had no such problem. It is a big pain as I get 3 error message screens, then I have to copy the file on top of itself for it to continue. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I run a lot of crystal reports and also I send them to people who would not know how to handle this message.

    Thanks,
    Bob G

Excel worksheets have two names: the name displayed on the sheet tab and an internal name that can be seen in the Visual Basic Editor in the (Name) property. Perhaps there is a problem with this code name. Do you still have a copy of Excel 2000 around to check this?

Thanks for the quick response Hans. I do have someone in another Department who is still running 2000. This is above my knowledge of Excel though. I know how to open the Editor but that is about it. I am an Accountant and not a programmer. I am good at following directions though.

    Thanks,
    Bob

You don't need to create Visual Basic code for this. You can try the following for yourself, then tell your colleague about it:
    - Open any workbook in Excel.
    - Press Alt+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.
    - If you don't see a pane titled Properties - ..., select View | Properties.
    - You should see two columns in the Properties pane - names on the left, corresponding values on the right.
    - The (Name) property should be at the top, this is the internal code name of the active sheet.
    - The Name property further down is the caption of the sheet tab.
    - If there are more worksheets, you can select them in the Explorer-like treeview on the left hand side, to view their properties.

The code name of a sheet can be at most 31 characters long, it must begin with a letter and it cannot contain spaces or punctuation.

I tried what you suggested Hans. I have attached a picture of the 2003 file properties. The only difference from this and the 2000 properties is that 2000 had sheet1 in both spots for the name. Is there any way to turn off this repair feature? I have the enable background error checking turned off already as it was a pain, and I am not that stupid. LOL Thanks for your help on this matter.

I searched the CR knowledge base. Apparently it is a known problem - see Warning Msg: "Renamed Invalid Sheet Name" appears in Excel XP for workarounds.

Once again Hans comes to the rescue. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23> The people in this lounge are to be complimented for how they share their knowledge and expertise. <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30>. I played around with the title field in Crystal and whatever you name the title is what it names the work sheet in Excel 2003. Therefore, my titles will be sheet1. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Thanks again for your help on this matter Hans. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>
