Create Word Links in PDF (Office 2003)

This is more a PDF (Acrobat) question but I thought this was the closest forum. I have Word files with hyperlinks and I want to create PDF files that retain those links. I have Acrobat 6.0 Pro and I can create the PDFs just fine but the links do not get automatically created. I could of sworn that I had this working before and it was some Acrobat setting. I don't want to manually re-create these links in Acrobat so is there a setting I need to change to get Acrobat to build these links or am I imaging that it used to work?

The Acrobat toolbar for Word (PDFMaker.dot ?) is supposed to have this capability. Because it interferes with other add-ins, you might have removed it. However, you could add it as a global template temporarily to see whether it does what you need. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    Hi Deb,

Embedded links that bind text to a URL (eg text like 'click me' that works as a hyperlink) don't convert to a workable link in PDF. The text will appear blue and underlined, but clicking on does nothing.

However, if your document contains fully qualified links, (eg http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthread...l?Number=676398), they will work when converted to PDF.

Ahhh yes that's what I'm seeing and of course these ten Word files have a mix of fully qualified links and 'friendly' links (those that are named and map to a regular URL). I haven't found my pdfmaker.dot which jscher2000 suggested so I evidently had removed it (and forgotten about it). I guess I'll have to manually build out (replace) the 'named' URLs with Acrobat. I was hoping to avoid that since the idea of publishing this in PDF was to reduce the work. (I'm helping someone publish a web-based newsletter and past issues had links to Word docs which I wanted to replace with PDF.)

Are you sure about this? The attached PDF file contains the type of links you describe, and these work as they should. (This was created from a Word XP file, using Acrobat 7 Standard.)

There's an Acrobat setting that seems to control this, and I've included a screen shot of the dialog box in the attached file. This is available for me via the Acrobat menu in Word (though I can't remember how this was accessed using Acrobat 6.)

Thanks for that William. My information seems to have beem a bit dated - this is how it was with Acribat 5 (I think) and earlier.

Re: Create Word Links in PDF (Office 2003)

    Deb hi

I use this function all the time. However, there are a few things you need to know.

Firstly, the links will not be live if you distill the document (use the print function to convert to PDF).
Secondly, specific links will not be active if you convert the Word document after following a link. I have found the easiest way to avoid this is to save the document, close it, reopen and then convert. It is damned annoying when you convert a document with up to 200 links, to other documents or to open forms, to find that one (usually the most important one) doesn't work! Some of my Master documents (that's another story) can take 1/2 an hour to convert.

    Hope this helps
    cheers

You are correct but only if I had the PDFmaker add-in installed. In my case it wasn't initially installed and so when I converted to PDF, only the fully qualified links were retained. I then enabled PDFmaker for this one exercise and the conversion went much smooth with all links kept. This add-in does cause other problems so I removed it but it's good to know it has its good side.
