    Firefox Spelling (Fx 2.0.0.9)

I thought I'd start a thread here in the Browser Forum rather than continuing on in the Lounge Matters board, after this post from Leif: <post:=676,351>post 676,351</post:>. That thread is pretty old and slow loading, for me.

Many of you have heard me say that I try to stay a pretty plain-vanilla browser user and STILL have no actively used addons in my Fx. I went looking to see what Leif was talking about and came upon something called Spellbound which will not install under Fx 2.0.0.9 so I have to ask, of Leif or whomever else cares to respond: how do I get spell checking installed as a part of Firefox?

    Hi Al,

Tools --> Options --> Advanced Tab --> General.

On that screen, there is an option to "Check my spelling as I type".

The answer that Chris gave should get spell checking to work, but if it does not here are a couple of other things to check.

1/ Right-click on a text area and make sure there is a tick next to Spell check this field

If spell-checking is enabled there should be a tick by this. If there is no tick by the above item then you need to check a preference as it may be set up incorrectly. Type about:config into the address/location bar and press enter to bring up the list of preferences. Find the one called layout.spellcheckDefault and make sure it is set to either 1 or 2. For more details on this preference see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Layout.spellcheckDefault

2/ Right-click on a text area and select Languages. This will give a list of installed dictionaries, one needs to be selected (have a tick by it). If none are listed you need to add a dictionary. If you have installed a dictionary but it does not appear then you may have an extension that is causing spell checking to be disabled. To test this you need to disable your other extensions until you find the culprit.

Thanks a bunch, Chris (and Tony too). I don't know how I missed that, but it sure does work. I've only checked on this post so far, so I don't know about adding to the dictionary and so on, but thanks to Leif for starting me on this quest.

The GB version does not come with a dictionary (I believe due to licensing issues), so you need to install one.

As a complication, the en-GB dictionary has an error in the set-up file that prevents it from being installed in Firefox 2, but fortunately you can get around this. For details of how to add the en-GB dictionary plus a link to a version that somebody has updated to allow you to install it see http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=533612
