    Word/Excel Lockup. (Office 97)

I have two users that both have HP E-Vectra computer, running
    Win2k, Novell 4.7, and Office 97. (I mention the computer brand/Type because
it's the only ones that have this problem)

Whenever the user tries to open MS-Excel 97, they get the following error.

The instruction at "0x77a20d39" referenced memory at "0xf162ca40". The
    memory could not be "read".

When you press ok, Excel Closes.

Whenever the user tries to open MS-Word, word locks up at the splash screen.

    Any Ideas?

How are they trying to open Word and Excel, by double clicking a file in Windows Explorer, by clicking in icon, or by starting the application and then opening a document? Does it make a difference which way they do it? Are the other machines that don't have this problem running the same combination of Windows, Novell and Office?

Haven't seen both Excel and Word go feral at the same time. However some things that are worth trying.

    1. Power off as Excel seems to leave *bits* floating around the memory when it crashes.
    2. Delete all temporary file (especially in Widowstemp).
    3. From the Add Software try re-installing Office.

My experience Haas been with Win95 & Win98, Off95 & Off98 and most flavours of the Netware client from 2.1 to 3.3.

Yeah, other machines are exactly the same. The both crash no matter which way you run it.

Can you open the application if you hold down the shift key as you open it? That would suggest you had a couple of templates that had gone bad and you could do something about that. If you can't open the applications at all without a crash, then you have no choice but to reinstall.
