IE7 & Tabbed browsing (IE7)

(Edited by acerfmayer on 16-Nov-07 19:05. I have kept all the defaults.)
IE7 + tabbed browsing

Am new to IE7 and have been exploring its features for many days now. I am confused by Tabbed Browsing. If I have, say Word on a tab and then want to Goggle something, either going to Goggle via a link or via address bar, Goggle displaces the Word tab. How to get out of tabbed mode to go to another site without the tab being involved? Hope this is (somewhat) clear.

Thank you. Any hints about working w/Tab welcomed!

One option is to start a new tab by clicking the new tab button to the right of the rightmost tab or by pressing Ctrl+T.
Then navigate to Google or any other site in the new tab.

To open a link in a new tab but keep the focus on the current tab, Ctrl+click the link.
To open a link in a new tab and make it the active tab, Shift+Ctrl+click the link.

To open a web adress in a new tab from the address bar, type the address then press Alt+Enter.

You can change the order of tabs by dragging them to the left or right.

You can turn tabbed browsing on and off in Tools | Internet Options...
Activate the General tab, and click the Settings button in the Tabs section.

Hans, thank you for your posts.

I did know the tips you gave. What I didn't realize - and is my understanding correct - that once Tabbed Browsing is enabled all, ALL sites visited when browsing will be tabbed.

Can you turn off tabbed browsing to visit a site that will be a one-time visit for that session without turning off the established tabs?

Guess I will "play" more with this feature.

    I'm sorry, I don't understand your question.

Added later: you can always open a second instance of Internet Explorer and open a site in that instance. But I don't see any advantage in that.

    Re: IE7 & Tabbed browsing (IE7)

I haven't used IE7 yet, so the following comment in based on Firefox. I do not turn on "automatic" tab proliferation. If I want a new window directed to a new tab (e.g., when I click a link in a post here), I hold Ctrl when clicking. If a site pops up a new window, for example, to display a video, I allow that to happen the way I assume it was designed and tested. I think this is a good way to take advantage of tabs without surprises or loss of functionality. But who knows, I might try something different next year.

A bit late, but you might try installing I.E 7 Pro It gives you many more features and really enhances the tabbed browsing.
    Thanks John

Well, how about that now? Where has this been that I've never heard or saw it mentioned anywhere else?

Have you actually used IE 7 Pro? If so, have you had any problems at all with it? I sure would like to have my browsing completed faster. Currently the links in OE 6 open ever so slowly,do you think this would help? I've saved the download page to my desktop but I will not install until I hear from others that have used it.

    Thanks for the heads-up.

I've used IE7Pro for some time with no problems. I think it adds several useful features to IE7.
