I have a machine of which I'm the only user.
Is there a way of causing xp to skip asking for a (non-existent) password, so that it boots straight to the desktop with no human intervention?
Thanks.

Even though there are other ways to do it, most of us still recommend MS TweakUI for XP which can be found in the right sidebar here: Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
There are a number of other utilities that you might also be interested in on the page. Enjoy.
Download and install TweakUI XP from Using Powertoys for Windows XP.
In TweakUI, click the + to the left of Logon.
Click on AutoLogon.
Tick the check box "Log on automatically at system startup".
Click OK.
