We are using Office 2007 throughtout our office with the exception of 3 notebook computers which still have Office 2003. We have downloaded the compatibility pack from Microsoft so that .docx files can be recognized on those notebooks. Whenever a .docx file is attached to an email message in Outlook on those laptops, however, it gets renamed with a .wps extension. Is there a fix for this? Thank you for any assistance.

I can't find anything relevant, but you could try creating a zip file from the document(s) and attachimg that instead of the documents themselves.

Do you have custom code for this? I can't replicate the problem (Outlook 2003, compatibility pack installed, attaching DOCX from a shared server).
I did recently notice that the compatibility pack was updated during the year and I uninstalled the old and installed the new. In case this is a fixed problem, you might check whether you have the latest version.
