    .NET Framework 3.5

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 has been released. It contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0, and includes .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.0 service pack 1

The initial download is only 2.7Mb but this is for the installer. When you run the installer it downloads further components, in my case it was 36Mb though I don't know if it will be the same size for everybody.

IIRC, the .NET 3.5 download can be up to 56MB. You can also get Download details: .NET 2.0 SP1 (x86) & Download details: .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 separately. .NET 2.0 Sp-1 is a 23MB download. .NET 3.0 SP-1 is a 2.4 MB download of the installer then the installer downloads further components.

    Re: .NET Framework 3.5

Tony, I was checking my Belarc Advisor and discovered that I have numerous .NET Framework's installed. Add/Remove lists version 2.0 SP1 with 184.00 MB.which includes NET Framework 1 and 2.

I also have in A/R NET Framework 3.0 and 3.0 SP1 with 245.00 MB. I understand that 3.5 is a heavy program running on some systems as 36 MB.

I have several questions about .NET Framework. Are they necessary for a user such as I, should I have that many versions installed at the same time?
Would installing 3.5 duplicate the prior version or should all older versions be removed first. To my knowledge, I've never used nor needed Visual Studio.

My main issue is: Do I need the program at all? And should I install 3.5 if I do?

Again, I am what some may call house cleaning, by removing unused, unneeded programs.

    Re: .NET Framework 3.5

The different versions of the .Net Framework can coexist, for example if you install 3.0 it won't replace 2.0, and if you install 3.5 it won't replace 3.0.

There are several software applications that need (parts of) the .Net Framework to run. An example is Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing.

If you don't know whether you have any applications that require the .Net Framework, you can do either of the following:
    - Leave all versions installed, you never know when you might need them. (This would be my recommendation). If you do, I'd also install 3.5.
    - Uninstall all versions. If you find that an application won't run anymore, you can always reinstall the components that you need.

    Re: .NET Framework 3.5

With 2.0 SP1 taking up 184.00 MB and 3.0 SP1 taking up 245.00 MB I think I will un-install both and reinstall just the one needed if a program uses it. I have very few special programs that might need, I'll soon find out, won't I.

Just FYI, those disk space measurements in the Add/Remove programs panel are often quite wrong. Perhaps you can take a "before and after" measurement if you do an uninstall.

Don't bother. .NET 3.5 is built on 2.0 & 3.0. If they are not installed the 3.5 installer will install them. See Download details: .NET Framework 3.5 (Brief description section).

I'm getting results contrary to what you say here (I think?):

    Re: .NET Framework 3.5

I used another way to confirm the disk space. Using Your Uninstaller 2008 Pro, I found that version 2.0 SP1 is listed there as 184.69 MB. Version 3.0 SP1 is listed as 245.66 MB. Pretty durn close, don't you think?

    Re: .NET Framework 3.5

Since I made the decision to remove both 2.0 and 3.0 and not to install 3.5, looking at the download details isn't necessary. Don't you agree?

But, if I find some program needs .NET Framework, I will install 3.5, that should reduce the space used.

    Re: .NET Framework 3.5

The point is was trying to make was it won't reduce the space. .NET 3.5 requires .NET 2.0 & .NET 3.0. That is why is I posted the link so you could read what Microsoft says about the software. If you still want to uninstall 2.0 & 3.0 go ahead as long as you realize that some of other currently installed software may not work anymore.

Suspiciously close. Almost like it just uses the same calculation engine.

If I manually browse to C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFramework in Windows Explorer, right-click, and open Properties, the whole thing is only 148MB for 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0. Where did they stash the other 280MB? Hmmm...

    Re: .NET Framework 3.5

Well, I'm sure that I read that somewhere and observed it on one system. I'd just go ahead download the 3.0 file and install it. I did that on a couple of systems too after seeing some posts about installation problems with 3.5.

I removed them this morning. So far, nothings requested their presence.

It's too late to check it now, both were buried this morning with full honors.
