    IE7 on Vista -- Favorites (IE7)

I copied my Favorites from my desktop running IE7 on Vista Home Premium to my laptop running Vista Business. IE on the laptop now seems to be working just fine. However, I've lost Favorites on IE on my desktop! (Meaning, when I click the star to open Favorites, it shows a blank box, and I seem to be able to save a site to Favorites, but then it doesn't show when I try to open Favorites, either.) I do, however, get a Windows Explorer box (with all the Favorites in it) that pops up from my Start menu when I boot up the computer.

When I try to organize the Favorites, I get an error message saying the path isn't found, but it's some big, long path that's doubly redundant, so I'm thinking IE is looking for Favorites someplace where it shouldn't be looking, and that I have Favorites someplace where I shouldn't!

During the course of the copy, I'm not sure what I might have done to the desktop.ini file, either, but honestly I'm not sure what that file does so I might have messed it up.

My computer manufacturer support dinked around with me for about 90 minutes and then finally said I'd have to call Microsoft. That frustration and expense is not an attractive option. Anyone have an idea what I can try?

Should also say that trying to click on Documents and Settings now gives me a you-don't-have-access error.
    Thanks - - - Sher

Where did you copy the favorites to?
Also I hope you did NOT try and over write the Vista favorites folder with the one from XP.

I have copied the XP favorites to 4 different machines and at least 2 user accounts each, with out a issue. I copy just the links and sub folders, I never replace the "Favorite" it's self.

The thing to remember that ONE does does NOT want to replace any folder made by the OS by another. On some systems I have even seen it NOT allowed.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Nope, only Vista was involved. I copied Favorites from Vista Home Premium on my desktop to Vista Business on my laptop. That seems to have been a successful operation as Favorites on my laptop is working fine.

It's the desktop (the originating Favorites folder) that's now messed up.

There is a procedure (involving a bookmark.htm file) for moving favorites between OS. I didn't do that.

Have you look at the favorite folder using Windows Explorer?
How did you copy them from one machine to another?

If the folder "C:User(username)Favorites" is empty them you did MOVE them and NOT copied them.

If you can find the Favorites folder with Windows Explorer, right click and select Properties | Location. There should be a 'Reset to default' button.

For future reference the procedure you mentioned for copying Favorites from one machine to another is to use Export (on the context menu when you click 'add to favorites') on the originating machine, copy the bookmark.htm file to the target machine and use Import

Joe, bless you! This was a simple procedure and worked like a charm! I would never have found it, though, and was about to cave in and pay Microsoft for a support call. But this simple restore to default location was all that was necessary. This is great! <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>
