Refresh takes me back to www.wopr.com (home page)

    Hi,

I have lately noticed that when I press F5 to refresh a page, I get taken back to WOPR's home page of stead of the current page just reloading. Is this a browser "scenario" or is this a new setting on the site? I have not been around lately so I am not aware of any new changes in the lounge.

    TX
    Regards,
    Rudi

It doesn't happen for me in either Internet Explorer 7 or FireFox 2.0.0.9, and I use F5 very frequently.

The only explanation I can think of is that you have problems with your internet connection. If reloading the current page times out, the browser will eventually try to load the home page www.wopr.com. This only happens to me if the server has one of its (currently rare) hickups, not during normal operation.

Hmmm...it could be as you say. Tonights connection seems to be more sluggish than usual. I noticed this not in the lounge though but earlier while in my emails.

If it is a script which is loading the email to view, refreshing may simply be clearing the loaded mail and taking you back to the 'default'.
Does the url actually change when you select/read an email?

Sorry Leif, I do not understand what you mean here?

I notice it is still happening even though my connection speed is faster today. It does not matter where I am in the various forums...when I press F5 (or the refresh toolbar button) sometimes it refreshes, but mostly jumps me back to the WOPR home page, as below!

PS: This is not of major concern...please do not fuss too much with it as it seems to be on my PC only...(no one else has reported this scenario...I assume!)

If it's not the connection, I have no idea. I've never seen it happen on any PC except when the Lounge wasn't available while wopr.com was.

    Hi Rudi,

I was referring to you suggestion that the problem seemed to occur when you were accessing your email. I was guessing that your email web-page was loading emails to view using a script, but the main url stayed the same. When you hit refresh, it simply refreshed (restored) the default view of that page...

The main wopr.com page, as per your attachment, is usually where you end up if there is an error with the Lounge pages loading. How quickly is this happening? i.e. - you hit refresh and you end up at wopr.com in 2 seconds? 20 seconds? Immediately?

You just missed the mark in your suggestion... it takes about 3 seconds.

That's reasonably fast - it excludes the possibility of a time-out, the period for that is *much* longer. Mysterious!

    Re: Refresh ... possible answer!

AHA.. I have a possible answer that might make sense...I hope.

The graphic below shows the exact same page on two different occations in my browser. I navigated to this excel forum page as I usually do (though I cannot recall if I did it in the same way). Anyhow... I noticed that when I refreshed it obviously reloads the address at that current moment being displayed in the address bar. So the problem is actually that the address in not being updated in my address bar. This is a new problem? Is this a glitch or does my browser need an adjustment?

Sorry for this nagging prob, but it will be great to sort it out.
PS: This thread may need to move to the IE lounge if this becomes the primary issue.

FWIW, this happens to me as well....

I had noticed that wherever I am in the lounge, the address bar always shows http://www.wopr.com/ - I assumed this was some sort of system setting (new company) and I can't check on a home system as I'm between accomodation at the moment. I'll have a poke around in the options again, but I didn't find anything last time I looked...

    Re: Refresh ... possible answer!

That certainly explains the behavior, but I don't know why the address bar would persist in showing http://www.wopr.com for you and Brooke.

    Re: Refresh ... possible answer!

    Interesting...
I just did some testing. Go to WOPR homepage and click on the link for the Lounge.
What does your address bar show?
    'http://www.wopr.com/' yes?
It seems if you start from there, it always displays the main domain name, not 'http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/wwwthreads.pl' or whatever. So, clciking Refresh simply refreshes the url as displayed in the address bar.

So, unless you start from a bookmark/favorite/link using the full Lounge url, the address bar seems to stick to showing just the main domain <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Re: Refresh ... possible answer!

Yep, that seems to be it. I always use a favorite/bookmark that goes directly to the Lounge, that's why I'd never seen it.

A similar problem occurs if you follow the link "Ask for Windows and Office Help" on http://www.askwoody.com - it leads to the Main Index but the address bar says http://askwoody.com/askforhelp.php and that sticks wherever you go in the Lounge. If you refresh after drilling down, you're returned to the Main Index.

    Thanks for the research!
