    Office 2003 SP3 (Office 2003)

What is the current opinion regarding whether or not to install SP3 onto Office 2003? Have read so many pros and cons I am reluctant to risk it.

The only thing I have heard is there are a few issues with Outlook but tha is all I have heard in my quarter. There is a light at the tunnel and that is although you cannot uninstall the service pack you can restore by doing a roll back. What have you heard?

Apparently it is impossible to open some files created in earlier versions of Office.

Ooohh yes, that would be a problem.

I have had a quick look at MSKB 923618 and it appears this is a known issue and fixes are in place.

There are some problems with Access 2003 in SP3:
Compact and repair: see <post:=674,168>post 674,168</post:>
List boxes and combo boxes appear blank: see <post:=672,553>post 672,553</post:> and Combo Box Display Missing After Office 2003 Service Pack 3

    Re: Office 2003 SP3 (Office 2003)

This KB article lists 10 known issues after installing SP3. As far as not being able to open files created by earlier versions of Office the suggestions include getting the author to save the file in a different format, finding another computer which doesn't have Office 2003 installed (?) and modifying the registry. None of these so-called solutions seem either practical or, in the case of modifying the registry, particularly safe.

Yep, I agree, I think I have made my decision on this update and that is to err on the side of caution until SP 3+ comes along or at least ensuring all my maintenance back ups are working.

    Thanks for getting this into the Lounge <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>

I have installed SP3 on 4 or 5 computers with no problem, but if SP2 is stable and effective for you then I would also advise waiting.

I've installed SP-3 on 10 or so systems withouyt any adverse results. If you are reluctant, have SP-2 installed, and are up-to-date with patches then just wait a while for more information and/or fixes.
