Posts with missing parts

Has anyone, since the Lounge came back, looked at their own old posts? Obviously it must have happened, we are many around here. I have to confess that I have not looked at so many old threads were I have not participated (if not searching for something), but as time goes I will search more.

But when looking at my own posts and others in the same threads, I have found quite a bunch of mine that has been cut off, the last part is missing, or something else is weird.

A very fine example in this genre : <post:=646,137>post 646,137</post:>

So, is it something with my crippled English that made it particularly hard to save those posts or anything against Swedish people in general?

No, do not think so, but just to give some relief could someone please show a post not made by me that is crippled, cut off or squashed?

Ooops, found one: the post I reply to, mentioned above, by <!profile=Dennis>Dennis<!/profile>, it's late here ... Any other examples?

Single quotation marks (also known as apostrophes) may have been mistaken for the end of text in some recovered posts. Not sure why, exactly, probably something about SQL query syntax.

Numerous people subscribe the daily digests and would have copies of old posts and could assist in restoring this. Windows XP is not one of the boards I monitor, so I don't have that one.

Many attachments are missing, amd many posts (not just by Swedes) have been truncated in the recovered database, sadly...

If you need the text or attachment of a particular post, you can post a request in the relevant thread. As Jefferson notes, it's quite possible that someone can provide it from their own hard disk.

Re: Posts with missing parts

There's some evidence that when the Lounge "textbase" was recovered from the recent server failure, post text using ASCII characters higher than 132 have been truncated from the first such character, which would tend to hit Loungers using accents and umlauts, among other things!

Jefferson,
Yes, I do not know, but would have guessed that such or other marks could mess with text formatting in the recovery process.

When it comes to daily digests I have newer understood the concept here at the Lounge since there is a site to visit, so I am not using it myself. There may of course be some with slow connections or high prices that may have use of it. When I 10-15 years ago followed some mailing lists, daily digests made sense since there was no page to visit, and to receive each and everyone's mail separately would be to much.

But as you say, in a situation like this, older digests can work.

As to my own posts; I happen to have copies of almost everything more or less in published version, so most of the time no problem if someone would ask for "the end of the story". I probably have copies of some attachments as well.

Hans,
Yes, the attachment part is probably a hard struck at the Office area since many times complete solutions are provided that way.

As mentioned to to Jefferson; I wasn't in need of any text (other peoples posts), I have my own posts (most of the time). It was just a comment that I, though during limited searches, have found quite a bunch of my own posts truncated.

And you provided this long-winded reply: <post:=543,246>post 543,246</post:>

Here's an idea for a minimal music composition by Philip Glass: Music with Missing Parts.
